Similar to the majority of supermarket gas stations, Tesco began selling branded gasoline in the late 1980s under the Gulf, Texaco, or BP brands. In October 2005, it was announced that Tesco would purchase 21 supermarket forecourt stations from Morrisons. With this acquisition, Tesco became the UK's top supermarket fuel retailer, with about one-third of all supermarket-based forecourts.

Tesco provides Super Unleaded 99 Octane for its forecourts. The fuel, which has a 5 percent bioethanol blend, has been accessible at a few filling stations in the UK since mid-November 2005. Greenergy is the supplier of this to Tesco. 181 Tesco gas stations in the South and North West were switched over to biodiesel at the beginning of 2006.
